Podcast Recs: Mood-Boosters
Lindsay here! And I am a podcast connoisseur. I love a podcast in my ears when I’m making dinner, going for a walk, or driving. My taste is pretty diverse—I listen to episodes about topics far and wide, and I’d love to share some of my favorites with you!
Here is a list of my favorite episodes for when you need a good perk-up. A ginger shot for your soul, if you will.
“The Princess Bride With Chris Sarandon” from Failure to Adapt Podcast
This podcast is hosted by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and Red Scott, two writers/creators who discuss whether the book or the movie was better. They discuss the differences between the book and the movie adaptation of The Princess Bride, and also, surprise! Maggie’s related to Chris Sarandon, a.k.a. Prince Humperdinck, who tells the hosts what it was like filming The Princess Bride all those years ago.
Hosted by musical lover Lindsay Ellis and musical-hater Kaveh Taherian, this show takes one musical at a time and talks about its history, its specs, and an overall review of whatever live performance the hosts manage to see. They’re all great episodes, but the opening episode, about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, is pure fun.
“The Case of the Missing Hit” from Reply All
This show covers lots of topics, but is mostly an exploration of modern life—and this episode is a favorite of mine. A man is haunted by a song he heard on the radio as a kid… and the hosts track it down.
“Beanie Babies with Jamie Loftus” from You’re Wrong About
Like most millennials, I love You’re Wrong About, a show that chooses topics/people that we all misremember—or that the media purposely misled us about. This particular episode is about the rise (and fall) of the Beanie Baby phenomenon.
“Lillian Gilbreth” from The History Chicks
I love learning about women from women! The History Chicks dive deep into the lives of famous and/or forgotten women in history, and they take care to provide fascinating details while still keeping the information as a narrative. Lillian Gilbreth was the mother of the dozen from book/movie Cheaper by the Dozen, but she was much, much more than that!
